Ha ha. We were supposed to read it, and then I forgot and never even started it. Why don't we all agree to read it this week, and discuss it next week? Would that work?

Okay..... So I read it last night. Not the offficial 'first' chapter but close enought for me. I read Chakotay's part and I gotta say I really liked it. I really wished they had not left out B'Elanna swearing in Spanish (yeah I know all the bad words ) and her rude hand gestures. (Out of the show I mean.) I also liked they way the Maquis was better explained... but I guess you only do get those little details more in the book. the way they compared it to the Native Americans back in the day, made me much more sympathetic toward them and their cause. I actually liked reading it from Chakotay's point of view. So, yeah.... that was my take. Anyone else???

Ok, I agree with KJ. I actually enjoyed the Prologue, which is surprising seeing how I dislike Chakotay. Ha ha.
But I thought the battle was better developed than in the book, as was the exhaustion, fear, etc of the Maquis. The one thing I did notice was in the book, the Maquis ship has already gotten away from the Cardassian ship when the displacement wave hits them. In the episode, they were in the middle of a battle.

I haven't even seen this book. I know of its existence, but I'm just saying. I haven't read a VOY book in so long.... I started reading #2 ("The Escape") when I bought it at Trek Expo in early June, but I was in the middle of preparing to move. Then after I moved in early July I started hanging out a lot with a guy friend who'd been outta state for 10 months. I practically live at his house only going back to my apartment to sleep. Now we're getting married..... oy.... I haven't even seen any full Star Trek episode since about June 5th or so. I finally was able to see the last episode of DS9.

Ok so I've read the first two chapters. The first few pages of chapter one were hard to get past. The reason for this is because the authors used the wrong name for Janeway's dog, calling her Bear. Now, it's possible that the name change was a last minute rewrite, but everything else in the book is soooo like the episode, that I find it hard to believe.
Once you get over this horrible glitch though, the chapter is quite good. It is basically about Janeway's visit to the Auckland Penal Facility to ask Tom Paris to lead them into the Badlands. It follows the episode wonderfully, but it also gives you great insight into the characters and what they were thinking. And the extra little exchange between Paris and Janeway is dead on. I loved it, and thought it should have been included in the episode.
Chapter Two picks up with Tom arriving at Deep Space Nine. There's a great scene with Odo, where Tom gets offended by misreading the security officer's intentions. It again provides great insight into Tom's character. The situation with Harry and Quark is also disgusted in this chapter. It plays out almost identically to the episode.
The thing I like about this book is that they are all written from a different character's persepective. The Prologue is from Chakotay's view, Chapter One - Janeway's, Chapter Two - Tom's, and Chapter Three - Harry's.

You know what is funny. I completly forgot about this book club, but last night I couldnt sleep and I fell asleep reading caretaker. I am 50 pages into it and I am finding my self skipping to the quotations to read the book since I have read it and watched the episode so many times I cant count. But does any one else do this, just reading the quotations?"
