Guess what I learned today people... I went to donate blood at the local Carter Blood Care Blood Bank and I was rejected because I'm gay! There are a serious of questions you must answer before you give blood which is understandable...however, there is one question you better not answer yes to... "Have you had sexual contact with another man since 1977 to Present?" There are no questions as to what safety actions you took, no questions as to how many men... no HIV questions...no questions at all...just a simple I'm sorry we can't take your blood... I've been given to them twice a year since I was 18 years old, I'm going to be 23 in october four years I've been giving blood and just because I had SAFE INTERCOURSE with someone of the same gender, my blood is no longer good enough... American Land of the Free, Home of the Brave, a place were dreams come true.... as long as you're not taking it up the bum! by the way folks...how are you?

I can understand your reason for being upset. However, since the risk is much greater for gays to get STDs I also understand their thinking. Even condoms aren't the best way to keep from getting HIV. The HIV virus is smaller than sperm. Trying to get pregnant with condoms is like throwing a volleyball at a volleyball net. The sperm will only get through if there is a flaw in the condom. However, HIV getting through a condom is like throwing a baseball at the same net. Also, someone can have HIV/AIDS for even 15 years without knowing it or showing symptoms.

Yeah, I did my research... but it's just one of those things that really slaps you in the face when you're told... Straight people can be whores all the want and still give, but gays...we're just an broken strain in human DNA

I'm really sorry that happened. Mara made some good points. But you'd think with all the need for blood, there would be a way to take your blood anyway, with proof of absence of STDs or something. I've actually never heard of this being an issue before, and I live in Austin, which has probably the biggest gay population in Texas. I wonder if it's a federal or statewide thing, or just in your city/center.

Well, I live in Oklahoma and whenever I've given blood there's a bunch of questions regarding sex and some about with a gay man. They even turn away women who have had sex with a man who's been with a man.
I haven't given blood since I've been married and I was always so tempted to say "I'm a virgin. Can we just skip all the sex questions?" haha
