Hello my fellow Voyager fans!
I've been wanting to make a Janeway uniform for a long time now, but something has always puzzled me. I was hoping yall could help.
You know how the uniform is a jumper right? Or at least looks like one?
I was just wondering how it can still look like a jumper, but yet the actors and actresses can take off and put on the top.
In a few episodes we see Janeway with her jacket part of the uniform draped over a chair or she's just in the black pants and grey shirt then something happens, she slips it on then she's in the jumper again.
Did Kate and a few of the others like: Tim Russ, Robert Ducan McNeill, Roxann Dawson, and Robert Beltran have two different uniforms?
Take a look at "Night", " Macrocosm", "Extreme Risk", "Gravity", and I believe "Dark Frontier"...not to mention "Counterpoint" and you'll see what I mean.
So, like was it a full jumper or not?
I know in an interview Kate said the uniform was very comfortable. I just don't see how it could be comfortable if it was just a jumper cause that would mean you'd just have the shirt underneath, and to go to the bathroom, well everything from the waist down would be on the floor.
Can anyone help me get unperplexed?

I would assume that it's not a jumper. I thought the second uniform they had in TNG looked like a jumper as well, but we see Picard pull down his shirt a lot when he stands up, so it has to be separate pieces. I would assume the same for the VOY uniforms as well. I doubt they would make jumpers and then have to make a whole new uniform just so we can see them take off the jacket.

I could easily tell in TNG that it was not a jumper...except for Crusher's uniform. I saw the zipper in the back. Speaking of zippers I know they have hidden zippers, I have a few skirts where the zipper is only noticable because of the tab, otherwise it just looks like a seam. They may have done that in Voyager, but there is something else that does not add up. Some of the shirts had no zippers what-so-ever. You can tell if you get a very good close up picture and then make it really bright. So, I was kinda wondering why and how that could work if when it's a full uniform there's a zipper on the front. Another thing I noticed is that the back part of the uniform appears to be sewn onto the waist in the back. I know clothing gets worn out and that they do have to make new things. I started thinking perhaps they did that when they entered season 4 or 5? I've searched the web for explanantions and patterns, but I got nothing. Thank you for your input Mara.

Arachnia, the do use two separate uniforms. For most episodes it is a straight jumper. I believe it was Picardo that discussed how uncomfortable it is, because the jumper had stirrups that ran underneath their boots, to keep the pants legs impossibly straight and unwrinkled. When we see Janeway take her jacket off, it's a separate uniform. As far as the shirts, in the episode Macrocosm, it seems pretty evident that the shirt is velcroed together. I could be wrong about it, but when she takes the long sleeved shirt off to reveal the tanktop, it looks like she's pulling apart velcroed pieces. Hopefully these pictures will help. The first three are of the jumpsuits, where you can see it is all one continuous piece. The last picture is of the three piece uniform: EDIT: Ok, for some reason the last picture won't embed as a picture, so here's a link to it: startrekpropcollector.com/trekauctions/img/b4395d28581058bc90bc8037b52a7edeHope that helps.....

Wowie Zowie! Where in the worlds did you find that first and last picture?! Amazing! Thank you for your input too JF. Pictures also. Both of you have been helpful. About keeping things straight and unwrinkled...that is why Picard was told to tug down his uniform all the time. I don't remember who it was on the set that was so picky about that but according to what you said JF that same person must have been on the Voyager set too...not to mention the Janeway doll also has stirrups. Hehe! If anyone else wishes to reply feel free. I won't be sewing together a uniform anytime soon, besides, it's kinda fun just talking about the uniforms.

lol, shows how much I've paid attention to the uniforms... I never really put much thought into it, but assumed it was always more than one piece. Apparently, all I really knew about the uniforms all these years is that I wanted one bad.

The first picture I have also. I took it at the Experience in Vegas. In Macrosome it did look like the turtle neck shirt was velcrowed(sp) or maybe those little clear snaps. That is awesome that you are making one!
