This was under the Trivia section of Kate's IMDB (you guys have probably already read it). I was like "WTF??!" : Her character on "Star Trek: Voyager" (1995), Captain Kathryn Janeway, is regarded by fans as having Bipolar disorder because of her erratic actions. Ms. Mulgrew said she blames the writers.Do you guys as "fans" agree with that assesment. I love how they lumped all of us "fans" into one glob of people. I guess I'm not a "fan", because I for one don't think she was bipolar or erratic. Other than in Equinox, I thought Janeway had herself quite together. I believe we are all entitled to our "twig-snapping" moments, as Picard did in First Contact (*someone take that Tommy Gunn out of his hands; he's gone nuts.) See, we are all entitled to our "moments", but does that make us bipolar?

Having read that several times before, I can see both sides of the arguement. I personally, do not view her as bi-polar...though I must say, I don't take issue with the way it's worded. Now if it said ALL fans viewed her as such, perhaps, but the way it's worded doesn't bother me....not one bit.
I can, however, see the argument. Her behavior was erratic at times and she contradicted herself. However, for me, the issue was that it made her more human...which is a good thing, not a bad thing.

Bi-Polar? I guess I could see that over the course of the entire season? If you take into consideration, the fact that she was making policy decisions on a daily basis and trying to field their way through a situation that had never been charted before...I'm not sure bi-polar would be the correct term. I thought Janeway's action and behavior throughout the series reflected the fact that she was alone at the top and having to make life and death decisions daily. The mere fact she was in uncharted space was just enough. Yes, Starfleet has a million rules, but not even they could have a rule "for every situation".
If faced with the same thing, I think anyone would have reacted and acted as Janeway did.

I read that and the first time I saw it I thought, "really?" She had never made that impression on me and she still hasn't.

Thanks for everyone's imput, I can see your points. However, I just wonder if it would have been a man that they were talking about, would they have worded it as such, or thought of him has "bipolar". They probably would have called him "eccentric" and "complex", and left it at that (anyone ever heard of Mackenzie Calhoun? Nuff said). This world has so many double standards.

That's true, they probably would have been less critical of a man.

Naturally, if it had been Picard, he would never have been thought to be bi polar at all! It's that double standard thing happening as usual. Good point.

I was reading a thread where people were bashing Threshold (I didn't really like it but wow, I haven't come close to hating it like these people do), on a Voyager forum, and some of the posters were actually insulting Voyager in general and calling the series a sewer! How can someone go on a Voyager forum, where people who post on it like the show, and start flaming it??

Because they have nothing better to do with their lives. It's quite sad actually.

That's why I stopped going on the Star Trek forum; half the people on there are DS9ers or Enterprisers that are jealous of Voyager's original success as well as its revamped success from Spike. DS9 was a decent show, but its popularity didn't touch Voyager's, so they're grumpy. I only go on that forum now when I'm in the mood to fight.....

I found it because I was bored and reading the Voyager topics on IMDb. I haven't really gone on the official forum, the one where the bashers were was the Trek BBS board.

It's been awhile since I've been on this thread. I don't mean to double post, but I've recently learned of someone that doesn't like Captain Janeway yet is a so-called Voyager fan. How can ANYONE be a Voyager fan and not like Captain Janeway?
And HOW CAN ANYONE resist writing a fan letter to Kate when it only takes a few minutes and even less time to email. Especially when the letter will be fabulously embellished and carefully tucked away in it's cozy little scrapbook, where only Kate will read it. Missing out on a chance to "make her day"...........so sad. (you know I love you guys, right?)
