Ok, so I debated for a long time on whether or not politics should be discussed on here. Especially since it causes KJ and I to have rather HEATED debates. However, I finally decided that, as important as politics is to me, it deserves a spot in the other obsession list. However, if this thread becomes an issue, I will delete it. I know things can get rough when discussing hot topics. That said, take it away!!!

To each their own snowbelle. I love politics. Almost everything about it. Except fighting with my bestie!! But please don't feel like you HAVE to comment on anything posted here. This is just open for people who do want to discuss it.

Snowbelle, you don't know me very well, so I'll let you in on a secret: it's pretty darn hard to offend me. It won't happen.

I do keep up with politics daily. I love to know what's going on. However, I don't really enjoy discussing it. It's really hard for me to talk about my beliefs with someone who disagrees or even agrees with me without things getting heated in some way. Maybe they agree with me on one point, but for a different reason than I do. I've honestly only found one person with whom I can talk about our beliefs, same or different, without me gritting my teeth at some point. (And sadly, I'm not talking about my husband .) When it comes to the internet, it's much harder to calmly discuss beliefs and opinions. Even when discussions are carefully worded, people have a tendency to "hear" the person speaking angrily. (I could go into a long story about a recent occurrence of that, but I'll spare you.) Remember in the topic "The Church!" when Captain Malfoy was talking about a club called "The Church" and how it was different from real churches? I then took the time to explain to him what a real church is supposed to be and some people just get stupid and start judging stupid things and doing and saying things in the name of God when He would never say to do/say those things. I don't know if I'd offended him, but we didn't see him here for many months after that. He did show up again later, and we even follow each other on Twitter now. I guess I just brought that up to say that I'm not a fan of myself getting involved in belief/opinion discussions, but I will stick up for what I believe when I think it's necessary. Anyway, that was longer than I thought. And no, I'm not against this thread.

I LOVE politics!!! Especially now that I have seen the error of my ways and agree with my bff (Janeway Forever)! So JF lets talk about stuff! I'm dying to get stuff out! I was watching Glen Beck today, and it's kind of scary to think about all the spending that we're doing and just getting in so deep that it can have this HUGE domino effect on everything! I'd kill for some free'er markets right now. (free'er... soooo not a word. ha ha) Seriously the crappy spending is just ridiculous.

Amen KJ!!! (About the talking, not the "seeing the error of your ways" ) Yeah, the spending is INSANE!!! This past Congress spent more than all of the previous Congresses COMBINED!!!! We need to get it under control before China collects on our debt.

Gosh, I know!
I hate the idea of being in debt to that country or any country in fact. We seriously could save a ton of money if we cracked down on all of the government 'programs' out there being seriously taken advantage of. Especially all of the illegal immigrants working all jolly and collecting taxes off fake social security numbers. Lord, there is some more jobs for you! Weed out this crap!

Now, if we're talking about "back-in-the-day politicians," I'm all over it. Abe Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, Winston Churchill, even Ronald Reagan. I especially love Winston Churchill right now. To think that people warned us about politicians like Obama decades and centuries ago. Honestly, the only thing I like about Obama is that he's caused America to wake up again.
There's one Churchill quote I heard recently that I'm trying to find, but I don't remember where I saw it. It was an analogy about how stupid it is to try to get out of debt by raising taxes.
Here's a good one:
"Everybody is in favor of free speech. Hardly a day passes without its being extolled, but some people’s idea of it is that they are free to say what they like, but if anyone says anything back, that is an outrage." - Sir Winston Churchill
Ooh! I found it:
"We contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle." - Sir Winston Churchill
Seriously. Back in the 1800s Dad worked the farm, maybe had a job in town, Mom stayed home with the 6 kids, and everything was fine and dandy money wise. Now the government taxes almost everything and families suffer even if both parents work.

Well Tina, the first step is to dismantle the welfare state. Get rid of food stamps, TANF, medicaid, etc. Allow the churches to do what they did for thousands of years before we looked to the government to do the job for them. In the 1800's, if your family fell on hard times it was your family, neighbors, and church who helped support you until you got back on your feet. It wasn't the federal government. And people were better for it.

Totally.
My dad had this HUGE bill for his kimo... and he applied through the hospital, which was through Catholic Charities, and they wrote it off. It is possible. If more people would help each other out once in a while we'd be much better off.

Yeah. The two major times I've been in the hospital (once for labor, and once for my gallbladder surgery), the hospitals both had systems in place to help those without insurance. They actually ended up writing off the entire hospital bills. I was left just with the individual doctors' bills. And there was no government need for assistance.
